What made me interested in dentistry was, one, it was a great way to help people. Lucked into making some good decisions in the early stages of my career, and I don’t regret what I’ve done. It’s been a great ride. I’ve been doing this for 43 years now, and I’ve had the privilege of having two of my three children also pursue careers in dentistry, and currently, I have my youngest practicing with me.
It’s always a great feeling to be able to help someone either get out of pain, fix a concern that they have, or to improve their smile, and they are very grateful for what you’re able to do for them. And, of course, it’s always great to be able to do those things and not cause that person to have discomfort and try to allay their fears because a lot of people have significant deep fear of going to the dentist from either previous experiences or just are afraid of it.
It’s very rewarding being able to help people. I like patients to be involved in their treatment and decision-making and I’m just not trying to sell them something or tell them, “This is what you have to do.” It’s sort of a co-diagnosis and a co-treatment plan, and so they’re on board with whatever we’re gonna do but the more they get to know you, the more comfortable they are in the office and you can allay a lot of those fears that they may have lurking around in the back of their mind.
